The Persian Empire After the Middle Ages

Persian Empire

On the eastern border of the Ottoman Empire lay another empire known as the Persian Empire. This region had been a part of the earlier Islamic Empire but had broken away due to religious disagreements. The people of the Persian Empire were practicing Shiite Muslims, while much of the rest of the Islam world were Sunni Muslims.

In the 1500s A.D., a Shiite leader by the name of Ismail conquered the Persian Empire, and appointed himself as the new ruler, beginning what would be known as the Safavid Dynasty.

Ismail's reign was the beginning of the Safavid Dynasty in Persia.
