Lives of the Peasants
Medieval peasants had a difficult and often short life. They lived in one-room huts with dirt floors. These huts had no chimneys, which made them very cold in the winter. They had little or no furniture, and had to huddle together to keep warm.
These peasants ate mostly grain and occasionally vegetables from small gardens. Meat was scarce and rarely available. When meat was available, they often hung it from the rafters of their homes to show off. The term €˜bringing home the bacon’ comes from this time period. When men were successful enough to bring meat or bacon home to their families, they would brag that their husband brought home the bacon.
Disease was common, and most peasants did not live beyond the age of 40.
